Nebraska Democratic State Senator Ernie Chambers filed a lawsuit against God on September 14 in Douglas County Court to make an important point about the state's legal system. --Nebraska Democratic State Senator Ernie Chambers filed a lawsuit against God on September 14 in Douglas County Court. The suit asks for a "permanent injunction ordering Defendant to cease certain harmful activities and the making of terroristic threats." Among the harmful activities allegedly caused by the Defendant are "fearsome floods, egregious earthquakes, horrendous hurricanes, terrifying tornados, pestilential plagues, ferocious famines, devastating droughts, genocidal wars, birth defects and the like." Chambers, who has represented Omaha, Nebraska, since 1970, filed the lawsuit to make an important point: the Nebraska state constitution allows lawsuits to be filed for any reason. "The Constitution requires that the courthouse doors be open, so you cannot prohibit the filing of suits," Chambers says. "Anyone can sue anyone they choose, even God." The suit, Chambers v. God, illustrates that leaving the courthouse doors wide open invites anyone to walk in, whether deserving or not. Where is Saint Peter when you need him?
