The Role of Punitive Damages in Civil Litigation: New Evidence from Lawsuit Filings

Punitive damages in civil litigation are the subject of fierce controversy. Good data about punitive damages are scarce, however, because there is no complete statistical database of trial verdicts. The debate tends to proceed on the anecdotal level. This study attempts to fill the void with solid quantitative analysis.
