Making Digital Textbooks a New Chapter in School Choice

California became the first state in May to offer schools free, open-source digital textbooks for high school students. "California's Digital Textbook Initiative gives school districts high-quality, cost-effective options to consider when choosing textbooks for the classroom - not only during these difficult economic times but in the years to come," said Governor Schwarzenegger.

U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan says fixing D.C. Public Schools where tens of thousands of children languish each year is "the toughest work in urban education today." Trouble is, D.C. Public Schools have been among the country's most expensive, dysfunctional, and dangerous schooling systems for decades. That's why Duncan, many Members of Congress, and President Obama won't send own their children there-but they are trying to force hundreds of other people's children back into those same schools by killing the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program.

Cash-for-Clunkers: Education Edition

The "cash-for-clunkers" program gives car owners federally-funded vouchers worth up to $4,500 to trade in their gas-guzzlers for more fuel efficient models. Five years ago, Congress enacted an educational version of this program. Under the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program, low-income parents can use federally-funded vouchers worth up to $7,500 to trade in their children's clunker schools for a top-of the line education at many of the same schools Presidents and Members of Congress send their children (including St. Albans, Sidwell Friends, and National Cathedral).
