States fail national problem
Submitted by Sally C. Pipes on 1.30.2007
Despite the increasing popularity of providing universal health care at the state level, most of the current plans are completely misguided ("Idea of medical care for all grows," Jan. 21). Modeled largely after the Massachusetts and California plans, these initiatives will do little to tackle the major problem plaguing the American system -- out-of-control costs.
Mitt Romney at The National Review Summit
Submitted on 1.29.2007
Former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts, running for the Republican nomination for president, gave the dinner speech Saturday at the National Review Institute's summit, remarks that drew attention and media coverage because of the perceived need for Romney to appeal to conservatives within the party.
The governor need not look far to identify the cause of the health care affordability crisis: he works every day at its center.

As Governor Arnold Schwarrenegger begins his second term, his chief priority is health reform.
Arnold's folly
Submitted by Sally C. Pipes on 1.22.2007
“Everyone in California must have health insurance," declared Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger as he rolled out a Massachusetts-style scheme to blanket the state in health insurance. The politician who came to power attacking an employer-health-insurance mandate, and vetoed a single-payer bill once in office, is now proposing a health-care plan that relies on the former and will almost certainly result in the latter.

House Passes Part D Rx Negotiations Bill; Senate Goes Slow in Face of Opposition
Submitted on 1.19.2007
As expected, the full House passed legislation last week that gives HHS the authority to negotiate prescription drug prices under the Medicare Part D benefit. The initiative, however, is expected to face a much tougher time in the Senate, where some Democrats already have expressed skepticism about the government's ability to drive prices lower than what can be achieved by private health plans and PBMs.
Both plans go too far. Government meddling can’t fix this
Submitted by Sally C. Pipes on 1.16.2007
California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has proposed a $12 billion health care package that he says should be the model for the rest of the country.
Government Meddling Can't Fix Health Care
Submitted on 1.16.2007
Forcing people to buy health insurance will not solve the problem of the uninsured, make America healthier or decrease the amount of money we spend on health care.
No Crisis To Cure
Submitted on 1.12.2007
Health Care: The House has passed a bill that requires Washington to negotiate drug prices for Medicare patients. We hope the Senate is wiser. If not, we have to trust the president's veto threat isn't an empty one.
