1.25.2001
For Immediate Release: January 25, 2001
SAN FRANCISCO – President George W. Bush has named three environmental experts associated with the California-based Pacific Research Institute (PRI) to top positions in his Cabinet and Transition Advisory Teams: Gale Norton, nominee for Secretary of Interior; Steven Hayward, Transition Advisory Team for the Environmental Protection Agency; and Terry Anderson, Transition Advisory Team for the Dept. of the Interior. "The Pacific Research Institute is extremely proud that President Bush has named three exceptional environmental scholars to lead his environmental agenda," said Sally Pipes, president of the Institute. "As a powerful advocate of responsible stewardship of resources, Ms. Norton has done much to protect and enhance environmental quality. Dr. Anderson and Dr. Hayward will both provide outstanding leadership and insight on environmental concerns for the 21st century." á Gale Norton, nominee for Secretary of the Interior, was a fellow and member of PRI’s Center for Applied Jurisprudence. Norton participated in a property rights task force that produced PRI’s 1993 book Grand Theft and Petit Larceny: Property Rights in America, by Mark L. Pollot. In 1997, in Tempe, Arizona, Ms. Norton gave the keynote address, "Regaining the Initiative on Environmental Issues: An Elected Official’s Perspective," at PRI’s conference "Green Grassroots: Tackling Environmental Issues at the Local Level." á Dr. Steven Hayward, a senior fellow and director of PRI’s Center for Environmental and Regulatory Reform, was named to the Transition Advisory Team for the Environmental Protection Agency. Hayward co-authors PRI’s Index of Leading Environmental Indicators, released each year on Earth Day. He is a nationally- recognized expert on urban sprawl and other key environmental issues. á Dr. Terry Anderson was named to the Transition Advisory Team for the Dept. of the Interior. Anderson is executive director of the Political Economy Research Center in Bozeman, Montana, and a senior fellow in environmental studies at the Pacific Research Institute. Anderson is the author or editor of 21 books, including PRI’s seminal work Free Market Environmentalism, which introduced the now-popular concept of using markets and property rights to manage natural resources.
