Press Release

For Immediate Release: October 31, 1999

San Francisco, CA – Yesterday, Pacific Research Institute (PRI) announced the five winners of its annual privatization competition, which honors California organizations that better provide services normally rendered by state or local government.

This year’s winners include:

  1. Operation Access of San Francisco, the grand prize winner, for its work in health care;
  2. Harbor House Ministries of Oakland, for its work in community development;
  3. California Waterfowl Association of Sacramento, for its work on the environment;
  4. PUENTE Learning Center of Los Angeles, for its work in education; and,
  5. Sisters by Choice of San Diego, for its work in social services.

The grand prize-winner, Operation Access, was awarded $10,000. Harbor House Ministries, California Waterfowl Association, PUENTE Learning Center, and Sisters by Choice each were awarded $2,500.

"We’re proud to present these outstanding organizations with monetary prizes that will help them continue their great work," said PRI President and CEO Sally C. Pipes. "We received many hundreds of quality applications from around the state, but these five definitely stood out."

The winners were recognized during the Pacific Research Institute’s 20th anniversary celebration, which culminated in a gala dinner and keynote address by Lady Thatcher, former Prime Minister of Britain Lady, known for her privatization efforts.
