Lance IzumiSAN FRANCISCO – Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today announced the appointment of Katherine Albiani, Benita Haley, Lance Izumi and Pauline Larwood to the California Community College Board of Governors.

"Community colleges are an integral part of our state's higher education system, providing affordable access to a quality education to thousands of Californians," said Governor Schwarzenegger. "Each of the individuals I have appointed today shares my commitment to higher education and will work to ensure continued vitality of our state's strong community colleges."

Katherine Albiani is president of the Los Rios Community College District Board of Trustees, a board she has been a member of since 1996. She is also vice president of the California Community College Trustees Association. Albiani is co-owner of Albiani Land and Livestock, a family-owned cattle and land business. The Elk Grove Unified School District has named the Kay L. Albiani Middle School, slated for completion in 2005, in her honor. She is a graduate of California State University, Sacramento. Albiani, 63, is a resident of Elk Grove. She is a Democrat.

Benita Haley most recently served as president of Benita Haley Consultants, where she assisted numerous community colleges with special projects and government relations. Prior to that, she served for over 25 years within the Santa Monica Community College District as a teacher, counselor and administrator. She earned a Master of Arts in educational administration from California State University, Los Angeles and an Education Doctorate from the University of Southern California. Haley, 62, currently resides in Manhattan Beach. She is a Republican.

Lance Izumi is a senior fellow in California Studies and Director of Education Studies at the Pacific Research Institute for Public Policy. He is the author of several major Pacific Research Institute studies and often speaks on education issues at statewide and national forums. Izumi has also served as a member of the professional development working group of the California Legislature's Joint Committee to develop a master plan for education and as chief speechwriter for Governor George Deukmejian. He holds a juris doctorate from the University of Southern California Law Center, a Master of Arts degree from the University of California, Davis and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Los Angeles. Izumi, 45, currently resides in Sacramento. He is a Republican.

Pauline Larwood serves on the Kern Community College Board of Trustees and is the owner of Larwood Associates Consulting. She served as a member of the Kern County Board of Supervisors for twelve years and was an adjunct professor at Bakersfield College for five years. Larwood is also a member of the advisory board to the president of California State University, Bakersfield. She holds a Life Elementary Teaching Credential, Secondary Teaching Credential, earned a Master of Arts degree from California State University, Bakersfield and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from California State University, Fresno. Larwood, 62, is a resident of Bakersfield. She is a Republican.

These positions require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100
per diem.

The California Community College Board of Governors sets policy and provides guidance for the 72 districts and 107 community colleges in California. The 17-member board is appointed by the Governor and selects a chancellor for the system who brings recommendations to the Board. Each community college district also has a locally-elected board of trustees responsible for the operations of their local colleges. These boards also assist in the development and recommendation of policy to the chancellor and board of governors.
