Press Release

For Immediate Release: September 18, 2001

San Francisco, CA—The Pacific Research Institute (PRI) is proud to announce the release of The Age of Reagan: The Fall of the Old Liberal Order, 1964-1980, a major historical work by Dr. Steven Hayward, a PRI senior fellow.

Age of ReaganThe decade and a half leading up to Ronald Reagan’s inauguration as president was pivotal. Unemployment rose to more than seven percent, the country was divided over war in Southeast Asia, and inept energy policies and massive government spending sent the economy into a tailspin.

This is the social landscape Dr. Hayward draws at the beginning of this definitive work. He vividly captures how the characters and events of the time shaped the social, political, and economic vision of Reagan and the conservative movement, with a profound impact on history.

National figures are hailing The Age of Reagan (Prima Publishing) as a comprehensive account of a turbulent time.

“A fascinating and extremely readable book about a unique era in American politics,” said Hon. Edwin Meese, former U.S. Attorney General.

“A patient and comprehensive account of domestic and foreign policy developments,” said William F. Buckley, Jr., founder of the National Review.

Sweeping in scope, the Age of Reagan is the product of scores of interviews and years of research. Hayward meticulously examines:

  • The crest of liberalism during the 1960s and its subsequent decline
  • The failure of Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society
  • Reagan’s years as California’s governor
  • Vietnam, Watergate, the Free-Speech Movement, and their aftermath
  • The listless leadership of Jimmy Carter
  • The rise of the new conservative movement

“A brilliant work of political history and analysis,” said Marc Landy, professor of politics at Boston College, “the first truly successful effort to treat the phenomenon of Ronald Reagan within a broader historical framework.”
