At its recent November 13th meeting, the Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges elected Lance Izumi as the Board’s vice president.  Mr. Izumi is director of education studies and senior fellow in California studies at the San Francisco-based Pacific Research Institute, the state’s premier free-market think tank.  He was appointed to the Board of Governors by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2004.  As vice president, Mr. Izumi will serve as the second-ranking officer on the Board behind Kay Albiani, newly-elected Board president.

After his election, Mr. Izumi commented, “I look forward to working with president Albiani and the rest of the members of the Board of Governors, plus state chancellor Mark Drummond and his office, to craft policies and implement strategies that will improve the outcomes of our students and assist our colleges to meet their critical and varied missions.”

The Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges sets policy and provides guidance for the 72 districts and 109 colleges which constitute the system. The 17-member Board, appointed by the governor, formally interacts with state and federal officials and other state organizations.  Legislation affecting the California Community Colleges is, for the most part, channeled through the Board of Governors and presented to the Legislature.
