E-mail Print Rose D. Friedman (1911 – 2009)

8.19.2009

She was lucid and lively as ever at our Friedman Legacy event on July 31, but now Rose Friedman, a champion of liberty, has passed away at the grand age of 97. She was dearly beloved at PRI along with her husband Milton, who passed away in November of 2006, and with whom she co-authored influential books.

The 1980 Free to Choose, which summarizes her philosophy, became a PBS documentary. Capitalism and Freedom, from 1962, influenced a generation of scholars, many of them at PRI. Rose Friedman also collaborated with Milton on the 1984 Tyranny of the Status Quo.

Born in 1911, Rose attended Reed College in Portland, Oregon, before transferring to the University of Chicago. There she earned a degree in philosophy and met Milton. The rest is history.

Rose and Milton titled their 1998 autobiography Two Lucky People. We were the lucky ones to have known them for so long. Rest in peace, Rose Friedman. Your legacy will live on.
