Sacramento – In the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling that programs considering race in assigning students to schools are unconstitutional, cited the Pacific Research Institute’s study They Have Overcome: High Poverty, High Performing Schools in California authored by PRI director of Education Studies Lance T. Izumi. In his concurring opinion in Parents Involved in Community Schools v. Seattle School District No. 1, Justice Clarence Thomas cites the study as an example of research that shows that schools with primarily minority enrollments “have achieved outstanding educational results.” Commenting on the case, Mr. Izumi said, “The Supreme Court decision is a tremendous step forward toward ending race discrimination in our schools and reaffirms the fundamental principle that our Constitution and laws should be color-blind. Justice Thomas’ concurring opinion underscores the importance of effective schooling as the cure for minority under performance.” PRI’s study They Have Overcome, is available at the Pacific Research Institute online bookstore at http://liberty.pacificresearch.org/bookstore/id.178/book_detail.asp. ### About PRI For 27 years, the Pacific Research Institute (PRI) has championed freedom, opportunity, and individual responsibility through free-market policy solutions.
