The Legal Problems Facing Florida Demand Attention From Our Legislators

Letter to the Editor:
Florida's legal system is in shamble as indicated by three national rankings. Several months ago the American Tort Reform Association (ATRA) ranked South Florida as the No. 2 "judicial hellhole" in the nation. A few months later the Pacific Research Institute ranked Florida's entire legal system the dubious distinction of being dead last in the nation because of lawsuit abuse. And a few weeks ago The US Chamber Institute for Legal Reform ranked Florida 42 out of all 50 states in the country, in over legal climate.
This is bad for business in Florida and the way we are viewed nationwide. In a time when competition is a must and we have to be at the top of our game, such ranking do not project a positive image of our state. Floridians need to be disappointed in the manner in which our legal system has deteriorated. It seems like the wild, Wild West of the legal world. The Sunshine State is much better than these rankings and we need to let our public officials how we feel.
The legal problems facing our state demand attention from our legislators. Without meaningful reforms, we will continue to pay the price. Floridians need relief to get rid of the $830 a year "hidden tax". I hope that our Legislators can see the light and will try in this 2009 session to pass common sense legal reforms.
We, Floridians, still have a hard road ahead us in the fight to address the costs and consequences of meritless lawsuit abuse. Lawsuit abuse hurts all of us and we must continue to fight for reform.
We all pay, we all lose!
