San Francisco – House Majority Leader Dick Armey will speak on "Freedom and Responsibility: The Role Values Play in Shaping Public Policy " at the 7th Annual Speaker of National Prominence Dinner Friday, May 29, 1998 at 6:00 p.m. at the Lakeview Club in Oakland. "We are honored to have such a distinguished legislator as this year’s Speaker of National Prominence," said Sally Pipes, President and CEO of the Pacific Research Institute, joint sponsor of the annual event with the Smith Center for Private Enterprise Studies. First elected to Congress in 1984, Congressman Armey represents the 26th District of Texas. He is an advocate of policies based on free markets and limited government. Rep. Armey has promoted reformation of the public housing system, advancement of free market initiatives in U.S. farm policy, closure of more than 100 obsolete military bases nationwide and passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Rep. Armey was the principal author of the "Contract with America," which lead to the election of a Republican majority in Congress for the first time in 76 years. He was elected to his current position as House Majority Leader at the beginning of the 104th Congress.
