It is generally agreed upon by both criminal justice officials and academic researchers that there are growing numbers of seriously mentally ill individuals entering the criminal justice system. Up until now, however, there have been few estimates of the fiscal impact of this increase. While acknowledging the data limitations, this report makes estimations of the costs of the seriously mentally ill on corrections, law enforcement, and the courts.
