A Second Helping of First Things
Capital Ideas
By: Steven F. Hayward, Ph.D
2.26.1997

Many of you have written or commented on our discussion here last month about the First Things controversy over the problem of judicial oligarchy. This is a solid indication to us that sentiment at the grassroots is deep and widespread.

Outside the Glass Square
The Contrarian
By: Katherine Post
2.20.1997

According to a new biography of Lee Atwater, the late GOP wunderkind strategist, one of his favorite metaphors was the nine-dot puzzle: without lifting the pen, how do you connect a square of nine dots with four straight lines? The answer requires thinking outside the box; going outside the lines instead of limiting oneself to the scope of the square.

The Catholic Church Caves In To "Da' Mayor"
Capital Ideas
By: Lance T. Izumi, J.D.
2.19.1997

It looked like a fight between titans -- an old-fashioned morality play between the forces of good and evil. At the public policy precipice stood two Bay Area giants: hizzoner Willie "Belshazzar" Brown, "Da' Mayor" of San Francisco, and the Most Reverend William Levada, the city's Roman Catholic archbishop. The explosive issue to be contested: could a modern-day Caesar force the Church of St. Peter to accept man's law (in this case, San Francisco's domestic-partnership law which requires employers to give spousal benefits to unmarried heterosexual and homosexual live-in partners) over God's law.

The Black Left's War Against Black Conservatives
Capital Ideas
By: Lance T. Izumi, J.D.
2.12.1997

In his insightful book Pick a Better Country, Ken Hamblin, the nationally-syndicated conservative African American radio talk show host (known to millions of this listeners as the "Black Avenger"), notes that the African American Left's favorite method of silencing independent voices in the black community is to "challenge their blackness by calling them names that date back to the days of slavery -- demeaning names such as . . . 'Uncle Tom,' Aunt Jemima,' and 'Oreo.'"

The Aftermath of Myth-Busting
The Contrarian
By: Katherine Post
2.6.1997

When we released the briefing paper, "Free Markets, Free Choices: Women in the Workforce" at the end of 1995, we were surprised by the stir it caused. We believed the good news we had uncovered about women's success in the marketplace was liberating to women. It seemed a simple message: Women have made incredible progress over the last thirty years, but that success was due to changing personal choices, not programs or favored status.

Hapless Headlines and Other Heady Happenings
Capital Ideas
By: Steven F. Hayward, Ph.D
2.5.1997

"O bliss was it to be alive in that day," we imagine today's headline writers will tell their grandchildren some day. The Washington Post led off its front page with the following headline a couple of weeks back: "White House Guest Lists Didn't Include Rap Sheets." (And they weren't talking about rap music.) We thought the Bush Administration was fairly hapless by modern standards, but do you think this was much of a problem for those guys? ("Gee, Mr. President, we don't have Georgette Mosbacher's rap sheet-what are we going to do!?")
