Universities Still Not Getting Message
Capital Ideas
By: Lance T. Izumi, J.D.
4.30.1997

The headline of the New York Times news article said it all: "62 Top Colleges Endorse Bias in Admissions." In a reactionary last-ditch effort to rescue a failed and unconstitutional policy, the Association of American Universities (AAU) recently bought a large advertisement in the Times to thumb its nose at what the courts, the regents of the nation's most prestigious public university system, and the voters in the country's largest state have stated clearly and emphatically: that there is no place in America for race and gender preferences.

Is Earth Day Sustainable?
Capital Ideas
By: Steven F. Hayward, Ph.D
4.23.1997

Our redoubtable friend and colleague Fred Smith (president of the Competitive Enterprise Institute) returned recently from England with a zeitgeist gem that deserves a rebroadcast. Seems the BBC equivalent of "Saturday Night Live" contained a sketch of the second coming of Jesus, who naturally meets with reporters (the Pharisees of our day). "Well, I suppose you'll be back to your old tasks of curing the sick and feeding the hungry," a reporter asks. To which the Savior replies: "Yes, within, of course, the limits imposed by sustainable development."

The Contrarian

Eastin Trips Over National Standards
Capital Ideas
By: Lance T. Izumi, J.D.
4.16.1997

In early April, state schools chief Delaine Eastin and several business leaders journeyed to Washington D.C. to endorse President Clinton's call for national education standards and testing. Mr. Clinton gleefully seized Eastin's endorsement and announced that, "Today, America's largest school system and leaders of its most forward-leaning high-tech industries have joined together to put California alongside Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina and our military schools in support of a national standards movement."

Hawken the Goods
Capital Ideas
By: Steven F. Hayward, Ph.D
4.9.1997

I have occasionally described PRI's mission in liberal San Francisco as trying to bring a Smith & Wesson attitude to a Smith & Hawken style city. Comes now Mr. Paul Hawken himself, offering a perfect foil with a reflection about how capitalism can save the environment in a cover story in this month's Mother Jones magazine.

Notes From the Front
The Contrarian
By: Katherine Post
4.3.1997

I'll confess it -- I actually subscribe to Glamour magazine. Every month, I grit my teeth and flip through the Editorial pages filled with liberal rhetoric and seductive sound bites of indignation and victimology.

State School Boards Association Still Doesn't Get It
Capital Ideas
By: Lance T. Izumi, J.D.
4.2.1997

Two months ago, the Los Angeles Times published an op-ed by yours truly that contended that poor teaching methodologies rather than lack of government funding was responsible for poor student performance.

Index of Leading Environmental Indicators 1997
PRI Study
By: Steven F. Hayward, Ph.D, Boris DeWeil, Laura Jones, M. Danielle Smith
4.1.1997

The environment is a source of widespread anxiety and pessimism among the public and policy makers alike. Even though by most measures environmental quality has improved dramatically over the last 20 years, public opinion polls consistently show large majorities of the public are pessimistic about environmental quality. Leading politicians and environmental organizations, both of whom have a self-interest in being "crisis entrepreneurs," actively promote the idea that our future is in doubt.
