Turf Wars in the Battle of the Sexes
The Contrarian
By: Katherine Post
5.29.1997
In the last "Contrarian" I mentioned lessons from my mother. This week, while it's tempting to gloat a bit about the Supreme Court's decision in Paula Jones's harassment case against the President, I'll instead share a clipping my father sent me from The San Francisco Chronicle. Endearingly tattered and marked up with yellow highlighter, the article summarized the Senate debate over the bill to ban all partial birth abortions.

Capital Ideas
By: Lance T. Izumi, J.D.
5.28.1997
It's rare for any legislative body to reach unanimous agreement on a contentious issue, especially one involving the potential spurning of billions of dollars in lucrative international commerce. America's 12-Step Civilization
Capital Ideas
By: Steven F. Hayward, Ph.D
5.21.1997
It is always nice to escape to the Paso Robles Wine Festival this time of year, the more so after having spent two long days at a mainstream public policy conference on land use and environmental issues in Los Angeles. Seldom have I needed the comforts of the grape more.

A Fond Farewell to Murray
Capital Ideas
By: Steven F. Hayward, Ph.D
5.7.1997
have managed to get to the threshold of middle age without ever having read through an entire Anthony Lewis column. It is utterly unnecessary to read beyond the lead to grasp the whole of Lewis's tendentious "thought." Ditto for most other liberal columnists you can name.

Beware the Scandal Mongers
The Contrarian
By: Lisa Guillermin Gable
5.1.1997
Yesterday, a military judicial court convicted Delmar Simpson, an army drill sergeant at the now infamous Aberdeen training ground, of 18 out of 19 charges of rape. In the barrage of media coverage over the incident, reporters tossed around phrases like "systemic problems of the military" and "a culture of abuse," to describe relations between the sexes in our country's armed forces.

This report on welfare reform is the first in a series of publications that will focus on various aspects of California's current and future welfare system.
