Adventures in Fantasyland
The Contrarian
By: Pamela Lewis
6.26.1997
I've just spent the past week attending the AAUW (American Association of University Women) convention and college symposium at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim. They chose the perfect venue; with all the talk about how "white men" control the world, I felt like Alice in Wonderland watching the Queen shout "Off with their heads!" (Let's not forget that feminist groups like the AAUW, convinced Disney to change its Pirates of the Caribbean ride to a more "PC" version by changing the man chases woman scene to a man chases woman with food scene.)

The Democrats' State Budget Dilemma
Capital Ideas
By: Lance T. Izumi, J.D.
6.25.1997
Remember the old Bugs Bunny cartoons where Bugs and Daffy Duck argue over whether it's rabbit season or duck season? Well, it's June in Sacramento so it must be budget battle season. This year, however, lawmakers don't have to hunt very hard for tax dollars because California's economic rebound has provided them with an unexpected bonanza: an estimated $2.3 billion in extra tax revenues over the next two years.

From Watergate to Water Torture
Capital Ideas
By: Steven F. Hayward, Ph.D
6.18.1997

Bliss was it to be a liberal lawyer on a Congressional committee in the two years that followed.

The Contrarian
By: Katherine Post
6.12.1997
Speculation runs rampant here in Washington about President Clinton's commencement speech this weekend at the University of California at San Diego. He is expected to unveil his "initiative on race," but the White House is trying to keep the lid on specifics. If his minions' actions are any indication, Californians can expect a slap in the face.

Improving Education for Disadvantaged Kids
Capital Ideas
By: Lance T. Izumi, J.D.
6.11.1997
Perhaps the most daunting challenge facing California (and, indeed, all of America) is the continued academic underachievement of students from economically and socially disadvantaged backgrounds. In an increasingly information-based, high-tech economy, the low test scores and high dropout rates of these students will end up condemning them to a bleak life in society's underclass. What to do?

Marshall Virtues
Capital Ideas
By: Steven F. Hayward, Ph.D
6.3.1997
The chattering classes here are all a twitter about the 50th anniversary of the announcement of the Marshall Plan this week. The Marshall Plan is regarded nostalgically as the apotheosis of New Dealism gone global-sort of a Tennessee Valley Authority on the Rhine.
