There has been some media attention for Ward Connerly’s Proposition 54, the Racial Privacy Initiative, but almost no notice paid to Proposition 53, which would dedicate three percent of the state general fund each year to infrastructure projects such as roads and water supplies.

McQuillan, director of Business and Economic Studies at PRI, estimated the effect on California’s economy of a five-percent flat-rate income tax on all personal income above $30,000 and on all corporate income. He generated the numbers using the California State Tax Analysis Modeling Program (Cal-STAMP), PRI’s proprietary statistical model of the California economy that measures how changes in the state’s taxes affect its economic activity.

Australia has one of the worst records of mammalian extinction in the world, in large part because so many of its species evolved in isolation and were not well-equipped to deal with the introduced species that came with European settlement. In recent years, however, a focus on feral eradication and on protection of native species in feral-proof enclosures or sanctuaries has started to reverse this trend.

Earth Sanctuaries, Ltd., a private company in Australia, has been at the forefront of this type of protection. It has played a significant role in the recovery of many species.

A Beautiful Drug Dilemma

On July 25, the House passed a bill, H.R. 2427, that allows the importation of price-controlled prescription drugs from 25 other nations, with no certification of their safety. The legislation became part of the Medicare bill passed by the House, which has been sent to a conference committee for reconciliation with a Senate bill that also allows importation.
