SACRAMENTO – Most of the attention following the United States Supreme Court’s recent landmark decision in Parents Involved in Community Schools v. Seattle School District No. 1 et al. has focused on the court’s ruling that race cannot be used as a “tiebreaker” in assigning students to certain schools. Less discussed, but just as important from an education standpoint, was the court’s debate over how best to ensure quality education for all children.

That a new technology sparks fear is understandable, especially a device so small that it can be placed under the skin and used to track the bearer. Some who are concerned about RFID do not want to ban the technology but ask for simple rules for tag placement and use.

Is New Ethanol Requirement a Good Idea?

On June 21, the U.S. Senate passed a new energy bill that includes a requirement to produce 36 billion gallons of ethanol a year by 2022, a sevenfold increase over 2006 production. To be sure, alternatives and supplements to gasoline have benefits, but requiring ethanol production may result in more harm than good. For one thing, that amount of ethanol requires a commensurate increase in our production of feedstocks.
