On October 5, the United States learned that it had lost access to roughly half of its expected influenza vaccine supply when the British Government shut down production at Chiron’s Liverpool plant. Chiron, based in Emeryville, CA, is the only remaining supplier for the U.S. market. The reason was bacterial contamination in some of the vaccines.
The United States has the second highest vaccination rate in the world. It trails only Canada, a country known for being extremely risk averse.
