The Euphemism Of "Negotiations"
By: Pejman Yousefzadeh
1.12.2007
You know, this "100 hours" plan Congressional Democrats have embarked upon really isn't worth it. I realize that it is wonderful theater but aren't Representatives and Senators supposed to give . . . you know . . . consideration and thoughtful judgment to the bills that come before them? Especially one that plans on "negotiating" the disastrous option of price controls for medication? Rushing bad ideas through Congress is itself a bad idea. The only upside to all of this is that at last, the President's veto pen might get some exercise. Of course, a filibuster by Senate Republicans should make even a veto unnecessary but something needs to be done to prevent the price controls being planned from being implemented into law. And if the policy reasons in the Sally Pipes article are not enough to show that "negotiating" on this issue is a tremendously flawed approach, perhaps I ought to point to the policy reasons discussed here that mandate opposition to the price control approach.
