E-mail Print PRI Pamphlet: Giving A Voice To Workers: Why California Needs Paycheck Protection
Pamphlet
By: Lance T. Izumi, J.D.
10.20.2005

Currently, public-employee unions are free to use member dues to support political campaigns without obtaining approval from union members. Proposition 75, or the paycheck protection initiative, will require California public unions to get annual permission from members before member dues are spent for political purposes. The opt-in mechanism of paycheck protection ensures that every union member is able to choose how their money is spent.

“There is considerable misinformation about paycheck protection among the public,” said Lance T. Izumi, director of Education Studies at PRI. “Our study aims to dispel those myths. It highlights real life examples of California public workers and the obstacles they face when simply trying to exercise their fundamental right to support the political candidates and causes they believe in.”
