Pacific Research Institute President, CEO, and Thomas W. Smith Fellow in Health Care Policy Sally C. Pipes makes the case against single-payer health care and offers a vision for market-based health care reforms in her new book, False Premise, False Promise:  The Disastrous Reality of Medicare for All, now available from Encounter Books.  The book is available for purchase at Amazon.com and booksellers nationwide.

“Government-run, single-payer health care is a catastrophe for people forced to live under it,” said Pipes.  “My new book lays out the horrors of single-payer systems in Canada and the United Kingdom that are being promoted as the ideal health care system for the U.S., from long wait times for care to the subpar outcomes for patients, while offering a market-based vision for the affordable, accessible, quality care Americans deserve.”

Armed with facts and figures, False Premise, False Promise exposes the many problems with the “Medicare for All” plans under consideration in Congress, starting with the eye-popping costs to taxpayers and patients for so-called free health care.  In great detail, she explains how single-payer health care makes a litany of promises it can’t possibly keep.

Pipes also shares several real-life stories of patients in Canada and the United Kingdom who suffered under a single-payer system, including heart-wrenching stories of the human costs of free, government-run health care systems.

“The stories of the victims of single-payer – including mothers denied lifesaving drugs for their children and retirees forced to head abroad after being refused care at home – should serve as cautionary tales for anyone who thinks a single-payer system is a good fit for the American people,” said Pipes.

False Premise, False Promise will help educate Americans in advance of the 2020 election on why “Medicare for All” is a disastrous idea for our health and for freedom. It is an extremely timely and useful resource for candidates, the media, and voters.

Prior to becoming president of Pacific Research Institute, the California-based, free-market think tank, in 1991, Pipes, a former Canadian, served as assistant director at the Fraser Institute, based in Vancouver, Canada.  Frequently speaking to audiences and giving media interviews, she writes regular columns for Fox News, Forbes.com, and the Washington Examiner’s “Beltway Confidential” blog.  In September 2019, she and her debate partner won an Intelligence Squared debate in New York, arguing the negative on the motion, “Replace Private Insurance with Medicare for All”.
