In the 1960s and ’70s, California was the engine of the music industry. Hit after hit. Sound after sound. What started in Los Angeles rewired studios everywhere, from Nashville to Detroit and New York City. At the center of the LA scene was a group of musicians you’ve never heard of. The Wrecking Crew. They were Phil Spector’s house band for his revolutionary “Wall of Sound.” And they didn’t look like rock stars. They were jazz players. Classical musicians. Studio pros. They didn’t rebel against rock and roll. They wrecked it and rebuilt it.
