Government Shutdowns Are a Reminder To Privatize

In sum, instead of subjecting air travel to layers of inefficient bureaucracy, distorted incentives and the chaotic whims of politicians, we should work to depoliticize air travel and unleash the power of competition and private enterprise to the benefit of all.

Federal government shutdowns mean many things to different people. For ordinary Americans, they are a reminder of dysfunction in Washington. For partisans, they are an opportunity to blame the other side. But they can also be an opportunity for Americans to reconsider how and why the federal government does some of the things it does at all.

How America does air travel is instructive, as it’s a clear case study in government failure and missed opportunities.

First is air traffic control. There’s no good reason that air traffic controllers, employees of the Federal Aviation Administration, should be at the mercy of Congress passing funding bills in a timely manner.
