Pacific Research Institute Rated as One of World’s Top Independent Think Tanks in Annual Global Rankings

SAN FRANCISCO – The Pacific Research Institute, California’s leading free-market think tank, today announced that it was named one of the world’s top independent think tanks in the annual “Global Go To Think Tank Index Report” rankings from the Lauder Institute at the University of Pennsylvania.

“These latest rankings reaffirm what we have known all along – that PRI’s free-market research and commentary is influencing policymaking and public opinion on the important issues facing California and the nation,” said Sally C. Pipes, the Pacific Research Institute’s President, CEO, and Thomas W. Smith Fellow in Health Care Policy.  “As we begin the celebration of our 40th anniversary, these top rankings for PRI will inspire us all to continue our important work educating Californians and the nation with free market ideas on health care, the economy, education, the environment, and technology.”

The Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program of the Lauder Institute at the University of Pennsylvania – commonly referred to as the “think tanks’ think tank” – researches the role that think tanks play in shaping government policy and public opinion around the world.

In 2006, The Institute launched their annual global index of think tanks, annually recognizing worthy think tanks in all areas of public policy around the world.  Rankings were made following multiple rounds of input from scholars, journalists, public and private donors, and policymakers.

In the 2018 rankings, the Pacific Research Institute ranked #5 out of US-based free-market think tanks (affiliated with State Policy Network), and #23 out of US think tanks overall among the best independent think tanks in the world (#107 globally).

PRI also rated:

  • #4 among US-based free-market think tanks and #16 out of US think tanks overall among the best managed think tanks out of nearly 8200 around the world (#74 globally);
  • #6 among US-based free-market think tanks and #19 out of US think tanks overall among the think tanks with the best external relations/public engagement program (#76 globally); and
  • #10 among US-based free-market think tanks and #59 overall of top think tanks in the United States out of nearly 1900 think tanks.

Upon receiving these rankings, Pipes was recognized with a beautiful bouquet of multi-colored roses from her colleagues at the State Policy Network.

The Pacific Research Institute (www.pacificresearch.org) champions freedom, opportunity, and personal responsibility by advancing free-market policy ideas.  Follow PRI on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
