America’s health-care system needs reform. But replacing it with a more extreme version of the systems failing abroad would be a historic mistake—one that would leave patients poorer, sicker, and stuck waiting.

As Congress looks for ways to bring down the cost of insurance, a growing number of Democrats are pushing to get rid of insurance altogether and make the federal government the sole funder of health care in this country.

Several progressive Senate candidates have put Medicare for All at the center of their campaign platforms. Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., is touting polling showing widespread support for the idea. Legislators in some states, including Pennsylvania, are looking to advance statewide single-payer healthcare overhauls.

The idea that Americans would be better served by socialized medicine is as foolish as it is dangerous. Government-run health systems in other countries force patients to wait weeks and months for poor care—when they can get care at all.
