WBYS 1560-AM News for 5/13/2008

(Washington D.C.) — A new report by the Pacific Research Institute — a California think tank — compares the legal climates of all 50 states. According to this year’s U.S. Tort Liability Index, Florida ranked the worst in terms of tort costs, while North Dakota ranked the best. But the big question for local listeners is, how did Illinois compare? According to the report’s lead author, Dr. Lawrence McQuillan, Illinois ranked 47th in overall tort costs and has the highest litigation risks in the nation Dr. McQuillan says that In the competition for jobs and capital investment, states like Illinois, which suffers from high tort costs and litigiousness, will continue to lose jobs and businesses to states with superior tort systems. PRI developed the Index as a tool for governors and state legislators to assess their tort systems and to enact laws that will improve the business climate of their states. Illinois has a lot of work to do. Dr. McQuillan says that Illinois has among the highest tort costs in the nation. It ranks in the bottom ten in such categories as farmowners’ losses and homeowners’ losses, as well as medical malpractice losses. The last point is also noted by the American Medical Association, which designates Illinois as a state in ‘medical crisis.’ Unfortunately, Illinois has done little to enact reforms.” More information on how Illinois ranked in the report can be found at https://www.pacificresearch.org//.
