Evan Harris – Major Change in Federal Reserve Policy Announced

At yesterday’s Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium (held virtually), Fed Chair Jerome Powell announced a major policy change that is being called “average inflation targeting.” Powell’s comments begin at the 29:00 minute mark.

What does that mean for all of us? Zero or near zero interest rates for the foreseeable future. The Fed is backing away from it’s recent practice of raising interest rates once inflation nears two percent. Powell called the policy change a robust updating and says inflation will be allowed to run moderately above the standard two percent baseline.
