There are numerous other ways in which states provide Medicaid benefits to illegal immigrants. Many are deemed to be “lawfully residing” in the United States, despite their undocumented status — and thus qualify for the program. Others have been granted qualified alien status by states, which also opens the door to federal Medicaid funding.
“Not a single federal dollar goes to providing health insurance for undocumented immigrants. NOT. ONE. PENNY.” These were the words of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) in a recent X post, after Republicans accused Democrats of shutting down the government in order to keep funding Medicaid for illegal immigrants…
But the truth is much more complicated. Federal money does indeed make it possible for states to extend Medicaid to millions of illegal immigrants. Democrats have shut down the government, in part, to keep things that way.
