Michael Anton is a lecturer in politics and research fellow at Hillsdale College’s Kirby Center and a senior fellow at the Claremont Institute. In a September 2016 Claremont Review of Books essay, “The Flight 93 Election,” Anton, using the nom de plume Publius Decius Mus garnered national attention by urging American conservatives and libertarians to support Donald Trump’s presidential bid. He wrote: “2016 is the Flight 93 election: charge the cockpit or you die. You may die anyway. You—or the leader of your party—may make it into the cockpit and not know how to fly or land the plane. There are no guarantees.”

In his role as director of strategic communications for the White House’s National Security Council (2017-18) Anton advised President Trump and his national security team on matters such as recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and North Korea’s involvement in the Olympic Games, among others. Anton is a former speechwriter for George W. Bush, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, and executives at BlackRock and Citigroup. Anton is also a former Manhattan Institute staffer and has written for City Journal.

Anton received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Davis, before earning advanced degrees in political science from St. John’s College and Claremont Graduate University.
